Erykah Badu

For the second short essay writing assignment. I wrote mine on Erykah Badu because she really inspires me to continue to evolve into a better person. We're all humans and we all have our flaws/ imperfection and I feel that as a human being a lot of time we have a ridiculous standard of beauty and on top of that, I also believe that we often judge ourselves way too hard. Erykah Badu is a Grammy winner artist. one of my favorite song that she was featured in not too long ago was with Janelle Monae. The title of the song is call Q.E.E.N and the song is about the LGBT community" Even if it makes other uncomfortable I will love who I am” (Monae) Hearing the song make you want to dance but at the same time, it has a great message behind. Jannelle Monae said that they became inspired to write the song after a private conversation between her and Erykah Badu. One Thing I really love about Erykah Badu is that she is in control of her career. When she first came out you could tell her content had great quality. I do feel like her music is not for everyone because behind every song sometimes the messaged are very abstract and many might not understand it.She dresses how she wants not how the industry expects the typical artist to dress.Erykah Badu has so much impact on people that when she dated common he went from a typical rapper to dressing like a bohemian spiritual dude. Everyone talks about the Badu effect.unlike how most another artist such as Nina Simone who are called feminist Erykah Badu likes to be called a humanist. She says “I try to be as honest as I can and encourage that quality in my art. The things that people feel, the things people connect with, that is true honesty in art. I encourage all women, to be honest. I consider myself a spiritual being first, a human being second, a woman third, and fourth is pretty ... or ugly!"(Badu) Although she advocates for women it's clear she wants to advocate for not only women in general but all human being and that to me is amazing.
