The song "Formation" by Beyonce is a very powerful song no matter what your opinion of the topic is. I think the song was written in honor of many people she knows, along with events that have happened to her. Watching both the music video and the video at the Super Bowl, I do not really see where people believe she is arguing against police brutality. I know that there are references to people that were victims of police brutality, and like we discussed in class a small child, portrayed similarly to Treyvon Martin. In no part of the video were the police acting in an unjust way to the little boy, they had their hands in the air towards him. I believe that the song can be very meaningful and personal to some people. After talking in class today my point of view changed a little bit from the beginning. At first I believed that they way Beyonce went about performing this song at the super bowl was the wrong thing to do. I still believe that maybe she could have found a better way to do this but I also now see what her thinking process was. Beyonce is a very powerful figure in America, and all over the world. There is no doubt that she was very strategic when planning her performance at the super bowl and the release of this song. She used the platform she was given at the super bowl on top of the platform she has earned to launch this new song and make sure a lot of people heard it. From the artists perspective, this was a brilliant move. Some part of me still believes that the Super Bowl was not the proper place to bring in politics and personal beliefs. However, after class today I do have a different point of view.

  1. I agree with you in that she could have possibly gone about it another way, but she knew what she was doing. Even with the consequences she would face, she did it anyway because she felt it was the right thing to do

  2. I think the part that hinted towards police brutality wasn't so much the scene with the little boy, but rather the spray paint on the wall that read "Stop shooting us." It kind of upset me, because, as I wrote in my blog, I feel as though there are plenty of white people that are killed every day by cops as well. I feel as though both blacks and whites overgeneralize about each other. It is very frustrating to me that in this day and age, racism is still an issue. It is actually heartbreaking. I know it sounds so cliche, but why can't we just be friends? Regardless, I do agree that Beyoncé did a wonderful job using her platform to make a bold and effective point. I'm just not sure I completely agree with everything that she did. Great post Kathryn!

  3. I agree with you about the police brutality topic. I really couldn't find where she was really sending a negative message about the police force. I personally cannot stand people who follow the term "F the police". These people risk their lives everyday for us yet they get people who want nothing to do with them. I understand if maybe you've had a bad experience with a cop or cops, because i agree that there are cops out there who abuse their power, but that does not mean every single police officer is like that. I would be truly disappointed if Beyoncé was bashing the police, considering she gets escorted by them to almost everywhere that she goes...

  4. I agree with pretty much everything you said, especially about it being a very powerful song/statement. I see why some people might have seen the super bowl performance at a controversy, but at the end of the day, I think that where ever she would have performed the song, there would have been controversy.

    1. I totally agree with you when you say that wherever she performed the song there would have been controversy... do you think if she performed this song else where there would have been AS much controversy? example: if she were to do it on tour, the people at the concerts would have most likely supporters of her and her message. I believe there would still be controversy, just not as much.
