This blog represents the work of Bridgewater State University students. This course is focused not only on women in the music industry, but women who use/used their voices to comment on social and political issues. We are focused on how women have used/use their voices in order to express their power as women. We will analyze their work mainly through an intersectional feminist lens. This blog will contain the students' responses to weekly readings and classroom discussions.

The Riot Grrrl movement was a very powerful movement. All participants made themselves quite well-known by singing about things they believed in. I do believe though, that in several cases they went way too far. The performance that comes to mind when I think about them going too far is when they were singing in the church. I did not understand all of the lyrics because it was not in english but the captions said enough. They went to a church and basically sang a song about how awful Jesus is. I am perfectly okay with them singing about songs discussing your beliefs and whatever, but going to a church, a place where people go to worship Jesus, and bashing the religion as a whole is terrible. People go to church for many reasons, it is a safe place and a judgement free zone for so many people.

I also agree with you, I think that the movement was very powerful and passionate but in some situations, especially their performance at the cathedral, the took things too far. I believe you should be able to express yourself and your beliefs but at the same time you have to be mindful of where you are and other people.
ReplyDeleteI agree to there is a time and place to preform and in the church were people go to worship god was not the right place. Pussy Riot should have gone about it in a different matter such as playing in a place where it is appropriate to play their type of music and were people will appreciate it
ReplyDeleteKathryn, I really agree with you on this. It was extremely disrespectful to go to a church and sing those lyrics in the manner that they did. It is okay to have your own opinions but they shouldn't be thrown in people's faces.
