This blog represents the work of Bridgewater State University students. This course is focused not only on women in the music industry, but women who use/used their voices to comment on social and political issues. We are focused on how women have used/use their voices in order to express their power as women. We will analyze their work mainly through an intersectional feminist lens. This blog will contain the students' responses to weekly readings and classroom discussions.

I really enjoyed reading about Dolly Parton. When it comes to her music I am neutral, I don't love it, but I also don't hate it. Although Dolly has many fake aspects to her, like her wigs and make-up she is still 100% true to herself and that is something that I consider to be very admirable. No matter who you are in this world it seems to be getting harder and harder to stay true to yourself when we have all these images of "The perfect girl", let alone when you live a life of fame. Even though Dolly Parton had a likable image when it came to her body, that was just her. She did not make herself look like that to become more famous or likable. We discussed taking back the power when it comes to female artists and Dolly Parton is a perfect example of this. Many female artists we have studied have allowed their managers and other people to determine what they can sing, how they can dress, what they can say, and when they can say it. Often once this way becomes a little too successful for their managers likings they are told to tone it down. Dolly did not do this. She was always in charge of herself and her body. I do not believe Dolly Parton ever lost the power. She is a very powerful musician and person.

Kathryn, I agree that she is completely true to herself which is something that not many people are when they are a celebrity! I had also written about how she does not depend on anyone else to do her work for her and that she is always in charge of herself!
ReplyDeleteI liked your point on how women have a harder time being true to themselves when there are these images of these "perfect girls" all over the place and how Dolly did not choose to wear make up or a wig for others but for herself. I also agree that Dolly Parton is a powerful musician and think its great that she wasn't afraid to be true to herself.
ReplyDeleteKathryn, I really liked how you mentioned that she has many fake aspects but is 100% true to herself. Many girls love to wear makeup and people call them fake, but they don't know their personality.
ReplyDeleteI am on the same page with you when I don't love it but I don't hate it, but it's just her in general that I liked to read about especially her life and where she grew up from, and where she is at now. I like that she remained the same person through her life and career combined.
