What does Feminism actually mean?

The article, "Feminism: A Movement to End Sexist Oppression" explains feminism in different definitions, about the problems, and how people may feel toward the issue. What I found really interesting, while reading this article was a comment by Carmen Vasquez saying, "Feminism in  America has come to mean anything you like, honey." I believe that this quote is saying, there is no actually meaning of feminism, it all depends on what an individual person want it to mean. Not only does this quote stand out to me, I also agree with it.
To many people, feminism may mean differently to each person, whether it is personally or not in their own unique way. Feminism can mean following your dream without being stopped, power of women, being equal to men, having your own beliefs, being whoever you want to be, or equality, it all depends on the person who consider them selves feminist. As the article mentions, there is not an exact definition for feminism.
Feminism is a big thing in the United States rather the meaning of it is different for everybody or not, and to many it is a big problem. All feminist want the world to knowledge how men and women are not treated the same, and the disadvantages they get. Even though there have been many changes in the past years toward feminism, there are still  few ways feminism plays a role in our world today.

  1. When it comes to feminism, I know that I personally feel uncomfortable just hearing the word being used. I know that it is only because of the stereotype, that I feel that way. I often get a mental image of what I have come to learn a feminist "looks like" or more importantly, how they "act." While I do think that feminism is a great and necessary movement, I believe that the reason this world has such a warped view of it, is because of the people that have taken it too far. There is nothing wrong with promoting women's rights, however, when I Googled "Feminist Protest" I was presented with a multitude of pictures of women in the streets partially naked. I'm sorry, but what does nudism have to do with feminism? I know this is not so much where you were going with your post, I just wanted to say that I agree with there being no concrete definition, as well as the fear of declaring feminism. Also, to give reasons on why I feel feminism may be viewed the way that it is in the present day.

  2. I thought that you made an interesting point when you mentioned the quote and said that there is no one actual meaning of feminism, it all depends on what the person wants it to mean. I also feel like this is true and as a result of there being no one clear definition this has caused confusion as to what feminism is about. This is causing women to be uncomfortable and even consider feminism a negative thing when it really shouldn't be. Women should be able to stand up for their rights without being afraid to be called a feminist.
